A school for the children of the transit centre.
A school has been set up so that children "on standby" (in the transit centre) can start or continue their schooling. The school also welcomes nearly 200 external children from the poorest families in Lubumbashi, for a reduced registration fee. The child can attend school from the first primary to the fourth secondary level with the pedagogical and commercial-computer options. A fully equipped computer room is also available for individual learning (15 laptops).
A school for the children's village.
Primary and secondary education (7th and 8th grades) are provided in our school in Karavia. 350 children from the Children's Village or from the poorest families in the area attend school there. BUMI is planning the construction of a second building for the secondary school as well as a technical school, with courses such as masonry, carpentry, mechanics, electricity, aesthetics,... so that the children can continue their schooling.
BUMI has also set up an early learning centre for the supervision and intellectual development of young children. The centre includes the nursery class as well as a play area, an integrated kitchen and an inner courtyard where sports activities are also organised. 2 specialised educators ensure learning through the use of adapted tools and various workshops. A BUMI football team has also been in existence for several years. A BUMI football team has also been in existence for several years and is made up of children from our Village and our school, under the supervision of a sports coach. Our team is part of the Inter Campus network of Inter Milan.
For the social reintegration of young people.
One of BUMI's priority objectives is social reintegration, which is achieved in particular through vocational training for underprivileged young people.
Several informal practical training courses are provided in the Children's Village for older adolescents. Their manual, intellectual and artistic skills are stimulated to give them a taste for autonomy and independence. These training courses and the skills they acquire will later enable them to find a job and become true responsible citizens, committed to their own development and capable of propelling their country forward.
BUMI has set up a training and agro-pastoral production programme on its land in Karavia. An agronomist and educators supervise organic market gardening and animal husbandry activities, and at the same time train about fifteen teenagers in agriculture and animal husbandry. The acquisition of these new skills will enable the young people to find a job in this sector or to maintain their own plot of land.
Linda de Mareuil, a fashion designer committed to us, supervises the sewing training. With the help of experienced seamstresses, it is in the Bumi sewing workshop located in the Children's Village that the children receive solid training in sewing and learn the secrets of the trade. The profits generated by the workshop will ensure the smooth running and sustainability of this training.
