BUMI, "life" in the Luba language, is a humanitarian and development NGO based in the DRC.
Created in 1985 by Thérèse Ilunga and Lucien Moser, its aim is to respond to the problems of public health, underdevelopment and poverty by ensuring the protection and education of orphaned and vulnerable children and young people.
BUMI was born in the north of Katanga, where several villages have suffered from armed conflict.Initially, BUMI's activity consisted in raising awareness among the inhabitants of the notions of sanitary hygiene, peace and respect for fundamental rights. Later, a dispensary was created in Lubumbashi to provide quality medical care at low cost. In 1992, the city experienced violent political and social unrest, which amplified the phenomenon of street children.
BUMI then refocuses its humanitarian and social actions on the reception, protection and education of these orphaned or abandoned children in order to offer them a better future. Today, the NGO takes care of 150 children aged 0 to 18 years old, hosted in the Children's Village of Karavia. Two schools have also been built to accommodate today more than 500 children.

BUMI has chosen to educate and protect children in need. Our mission? To raise them as they deserve to be, in a framework worthy of their childhood, and to stimulate their manual, intellectual and artistic skills, giving them a taste for autonomy and independence. In this way, they will become true citizens, capable of propelling their country along the path of development.
